First Day Activities: Speed Dating
I want to start the education part of my blog with one of my very favorite teaching strategies. I have found it especially effective with 9th graders. Famous Deaf Speed Dating
This is the first in a series of three posts about activities I usually do on the first days of class. The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Have you ever heard of speed dating? It’s an opportunity for people to quickly meet a large number of people to potentially date. Attendees are paired with each.
I use speed dating in my German 2 class to practice past participles. It’s kind of like walking flash cards. It works quite well, but one problem I run into is that students don’t necessarily “date” all of the possible past participles if they just move around the room randomly. Do you have this problem, or are your classes small enough that it isn’t an issue?
Last time I tried a more organized setup where students formed two concentric circles and one circle rotated to find a new date. Just wondering if you have this issue too? When I do it, I tell them that they can’t date the same question they have already seen. Since they are switching cards, they can date the same person multiple times, but not the same question. I also call myself the matchmaker. When ever someone seems to be slow to pair up, I pair them with someone else.
You could also try telling them that they need to have a specified number of dates. As far as the concentric circles, you can split the class in two and tell one group to form a circle. Once that is done, tell the remaining group to go stand in front of someone in the circle. This is the fastest way I know to set them up.

As the instructor and panel moderator, one has to manage the questions from the class as well as rein in the excitement and enthusiasm of the panel participants to impart their wisdom. A large panel makes that difficult. I asked the class for feedback following the inclusion of two panel discussions. They loved the panel but wanted to have time to ask more questions and hear more from each person than time allowed.
In reflecting upon their feedback, I had an epiphany: speaking directly with others about their work is similar to dating. Then you can decide whether you want to pursue that person… or not!

Using the “Speed Dating” Model to Enhance Student Learning
I am near the end of my trimester and trying to review some of what we have learned to prepare students for their upcoming final assessments. Speed-dating is great for getting students to use the language in short conversations. They get a ton of practice and feel more comfortable in pairs than speaking in front of big groups.
